The Collective for Liberatory Lawyering (C4LL) works collaboratively within the movement ecosystem to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline and create conditions for transformative education. We focus on interdisciplinary long-term monitoring of conditions in schools with a sharp focus on the human rights of the most marginalized students and parents.
In our liberatory lawyering practice, we contribute to long-standing work to challenge the American education and incarceration systems.
Traditional transactional relationships between attorneys and community uphold white supremacy by reinforcing the “expert” role of the licensed attorney. Community organizers have shifted our understanding away from these hierarchical relationships to the fundamental idea that lawyering should be in service of movement building.
We co-design.
Now is the moment to move beyond the language of “achievement” and veiled bias in “safety” concerns to expand a critical inquiry into how we confront and transform these systems.
